Old tiled stove
Entering through the main entrance of the Palace, you can see the biggest pride of the Palace – a unique tiled stove made in the beginning of the 20th century, created from 130 tiles, painted with 50 different views of Riga and Jūrmala. It was a gift to George Armitstead, the former Mayor of the city, on the 700th anniversary of Riga.
Halls and rooms of the Palace
White Hall features large windows and an exit to the veranda, a white fireplace and a piano, providing a romantic feeling. During the Soviet era, it was used for the needs of the People’s House and the cinema. Today, it has regained its original appearance, and newly-weds are invited to the first waltz in this Hall.
Red Hall once used to be the dining room of the first owners of the Palace. The entire family gathered around the massive wooden table in the evenings and the food was delivered from the kitchen, which was located on the ground floor, by a special lift. Hunting trophies on the wall remind us that the Palace was built specifically for hunting purposes.
The tearoom is decorated in calm pastel shades, which create the necessary mood for leisurely relaxation and gathering of thoughts. The place where “English tea” is served.
The dark shades in the wallpaper and fabric patterns, allow us to get a feel of the seriousness of the Manor’s owner in his work and rigor in his decision-making.
A truly romantic place for feminine conversations. An exquisite mirror display-case, elegant pedestals and a fireplace give the room lightness, while the motifs of nature play in the romantic furniture of the Palace. The mood of the room makes one wonder about the old times in the Manor.
The room is decorated in memory of the builder of the Palace George Armitstead (1847-1912) and introduces visitors to the family, life and work of the greatest Mayor of Riga. It displays the valuables of the Armitstead family: portraits of George Armitstead and his wife Cecil (born Pichlau), as well as grandfather J. Armitstead, travel case, sofa and blue embroidered pillow.
Forest expositions
The Forest Museum invites you to enjoy the magic of the forest and see various expositions in an interactive way, which tell visitors about the wildlife of Latvian forests – tree species, animals and processes of nature. In the exposition it is possible to see stuffed animals, get to know the voices of animals and birds, feel samples of fur and recognise the footprints of animals, learn about bird hatching, and understand the meaning of the hunting process.
Using the Overly application, it is possible to watch documentary footage about forest management in the middle of the 20th century.
In the permanent exposition you can get acquainted with works related to forest management in the 20th century: reforestation or organisation, maintenance, development, management and forest machinery. The exposition uses a range of tools and photographic materials from Jaunmoku Palace Museum, Kazdanga Palace (Boju Forest Museum), JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” and private archives, as well as publications on the history of forestry and photographs by Andris Eglītis.
Using the Overly application, it is possible to watch documentary footage about forest management in the middle of the 20th century.
For those who are interested in the theme of hunting, it will be interesting to see the exhibition in the Palace tower “Neither fluff nor feathers”. It introduces you to the hunting tools of the first half of the 20th century. You can see the images of the collection of firearms and the most popular hunting dogs of that time on the first platform of the Palace tower, and in the next – old photos of hunting scenes.
Open collection exhibition
The exhibition of large objects “Horse-pulled Forest tools in open collection” is available in the farm building of the complex. It complements the “Forest Management” exhibition on the 2nd floor of the palace, providing a broader view of forest management processes in the 20th century.
It displays objects from the collections of the Jaunmoku Museum and cooperation partners, such as forest ploughs, harrows, hunting trophy horns, etc.
The open collection exhibition can be viewed during the museum’s public educational events, by arranging a guided tour with the museum, as well as by schoolchildren as a part of the museum’s educational programme “mammmadaba”.
In addition to the viewing, visitors can watch demonstrations of forestry work, such as tree planting and timber sawing, and have the opportunity to try it out for themselves.
Cultural history and art exhibitions
You will need to take a few dozen steps to climb the approximately 20-metre-high Palace tower, which offers a spacious view of the surroundings of Jaunmokas. To make climbing more attractive, there are exhibitions on hunting topics in the tower.
It is hard to believe, but the Palace has not always been properly managed and aristocratic. During the Soviet era, when 20 families lived in the Palace, the building was converted beyond recognition and was on the verge of collapse. However, it is possible to find out how the Palace transformed from Sleeping Beauty into a Princess in the exposition about the restoration and development of the Jaunmoku Palace complex from 1974 to the present day.
In the Tower Hall, the exhibitions of art and cultural history change every season, but the collection of silver cases with a hunting theme is always there, as well as the collection of silver and gold monograms, which used to adorn hunters’ hats, belts and weapons. The size and layout of the Tower hall is very suitable for organising various small celebrations, seminars or meetings.
Column Hall is located on the ground floor of the Manor house – an old horse stable. The ceiling of the spacious and bright room is supported by slender cast iron columns. Column Hall is the largest room in the Jaunmoku Palace complex, but it can be divided into two parts by means of a curtain or a sound-insulating wall. Various art and cultural history exhibitions are also regularly held in this hall.
